Tim Holtz Holiday RosetteTree

So shortly after I added the Set of 3 Rosettes to my store, I noticed Tim Holtz had a blog post out showing how to use rosettes to make a holiday tree. Of course I had to try it (with a few modifications based on what I had on hand for supplies) and it turned out so cute!

Here's the full tree. I covered an artificial tealight candle for the base, and rolled some light cardboard into a tube for the tree trunk, then covered it with jute. Before assembling the tree, I brushed the rosettes with a little Peeled Paint Distress ink, and spritzed them with Dew Drop Glimmer Mist for a little holiday shimmer. I also used little pieces of straw between each layer of the tree to separate them a bit more.

For the topper, I tied three little jingle bells together with red string, tied the string in a couple bows and then hot glued the bells to the top of the tree.

And of course, due to the irresistible bells and string, I had a little company when I was trying to take pictures of my tree. :-)

Happy Holidays everyone!

If you want to play along, the supplies you will need are:

  • Embossing folder & embosser (I used the Swiss Dots folder by Provocraft and my Sizzix Texture Boutique)

  • A snowflake embellishment (I used the snowflake from this gift tag freebie, the video explains how I dressed it up)
  • Two coordinating colors of ribbon
  • One eyelet
  • One small charm
  • Adhesive
  • Thread or fishing line
And here's the video showing you how I put the tag together.  I hope you enjoy it.

Getting Creative with Embossing and Inking

I've been experimenting a lot lately with creating my own backgrounds from plain cardstock to design something totally unique and it's a lot of fun!  In this video, I show you how to use embossing (I use my Sizzix Texture Boutique) and some Tim Holtz Distress inks to create a fun effect.

Free Cutting File - Mittens

I remember when I was little, my grandma used to make me those knitted mittens on a string, the string went up one arm, across my back and down my other arm with a mitten on each end, so I would never lose them.  They worked!  Those mittens were the inspiration for the Mittens cutting file and the little card I made using the file.

First the card. I used some bulk white and blue cardstock to make the card. The background is embossed using a ProvoCraft swirly embossing folder (love my Texture Boutique!). The mittens were cut out of white card stock, then stamped and embossed with a snowflake stamp by Inkadinkadoo. Then I used Tim Holtz Broken China distress ink to color the mittens, and the embossed snowflakes resisted the ink. The cuffs were colored the same way, then covered with white flock. A little bit of embroidery floss provided the string, and the warm fuzzies sentiment finished it off.

And here's the cutting file for you. Just click on the preview image to download the files. As always, MTC, SVG and now PDF files are included in the free download. Enjoy! {{link has expired}}

A couple more Christmas Cards using Make the Cut!

These are a couple more cards I made last weekend.

I thought it would be fun to make a Christmas present card, the printed paper is from K & Company. I used Make the Cut! to create the tag, grunged it up a bit with some Tim Holtz distress ink and embossed the sentiment and little holly. The ribbon is wired, which makes it nice and easy to give the bow its shape.

For this card, I used printed paper by K & Company again (they came out with a couple mini paper pads for Christmas that are perfect for cardmaking). I used a large snowflake stamp by Hero Arts and clear embossing powder to add a little shininess to the background (although it is difficult to see in the photos), and stitched around the edge with silver thread. I downloaded a snowflake image from the web, traced it in Make the Cut! and then created a black-out shadow layer. The snowflake is cut from vellum and the shadow layer is cut from dark blue cardstock. Then I stitched the vellum and cardstock layers together using the same silver thread and added some gems to the snowflake to give it a little bling. The snowflake is adhered to the card with dimensional foam.

Nutcrackers in November Challenge at Make the Cut!

Have you been to the Make the Cut! forum lately? The Nutcrackers in November challenge is going on right now!  There's lots of great challenges to participate in, and prizes from great sponsors. (I should know, I'm one of them!! LOL) The challenge runs until the end of November, so there's still lots of time to check it out and create some projects. I don't think I'll be able to get to all the challenges, but I'm definitely going to try a few.

For Challenge One, there are a couple of free digital holiday paper packs to download, and the challenge is to create anything you like with them.

Here's the card I created.  I made a layered MTC cutting file for the bird, you can download it here if you'd like to use it. I also used last week's Mojo Monday sketch for the card design.

    Christmas Cards Galore!

My sister came over on Sunday and we had a great afternoon crafting together. I got a good start on my Christmas cards, so I'll post pics over the next few days. Here's the first one I'd like to share. I made this using my free Christmas Lights cutting file.

To stitch the "cord" for the lights, I penciled the line in, then sewed over it on my sewing machine using gold thread. I used dimensional foam adhesive to pop up the lights. The greeting is a Craft Smart stamp I picked up at Michaels, embossed with gold powder.

Hope you like it, I'll be back tomorrow with another!

    My Crafty Hubby

I just had to share this birthday card my husband made for me! It was my birthday a few days ago, so he decided that since I'm always making cards for other people, he should make one for me. But he didn't use my craft supplies to make it, he went into the garage and this was the result. This is how a man makes a card!

This is the outside of the card:

And the inside. The little buckle on the right side panel held a wooden charm for my Pandora bracelet, to remind me of the card. :-)

    Here's a close-up of the inscription.

I'm not sure I'll be adding a table saw to my craft room anytime soon, but this is probably the most unique card I'll ever receive!

Free Cutting File - Gingerbread Man

Now that Halloween is behind us, I'm starting to think about Christmas. I'm not one of those people who is ready for Christmas before the kids go back to school (don't know how they do it!) since I prefer to put off thoughts of winter as long as possible! But we just got our first snowfall yesterday that stuck to the ground, so I guess there's no getting around it.

Here's a sweet little gingerbread man I cooked up for you, he'll be perfect on your Christmas cards or scrapbook pages about holiday baking, or even hang him from your tree! His Santa hat is a completely separate piece, so you can make him with or without the hat. Just click on the preview image to download the files. As always, MTC, SVG and now PDF files are included in the free download. Enjoy!

This is a quick little card I whipped up using the Gingerbread Man cutting file, isn't it cute! The face is from the Everyday Character Face Assortment by Peachy Keen Stamps. The patterned paper is from a Christmas designer mat pad by K&Company. Other papers are bulk sheets from Michaels, and the flock on the Santa hat is by Martha Stewart.

Make the Cut! makes Mojo Monday Easy!

I had so much fun playing with this week's Mojo Monday sketch! Here's the sketch for this week:

I bought a little pad of patterned Halloween papers by Recollections called Midnight Magic on the weekend, and was itching to create with it. So I went crazy with patterned paper, distressing, sewing and inking, did a little cutting using Make the Cut!, added a bit of bling to finish it off and here's what I came up with (the bats are actually popped up, although it's difficult to tell in the photo):

    Happy early Halloween everyone! LOL

Video Tutorial - Creating Nested Shapes in Make the Cut!

In addition to designing my more elaborate files (purses, etc.) I often turn to Make the Cut! to quickly create simpler shapes for my card making projects, rather than spending a ton of money on large punches. For this card, I've created a simple nested shape that I used on the front and inside of the card to stamp my image and greeting on.

This video tutorial demonstrates how to create nested shapes in Make the Cut! Enjoy!

    Vintage Lamp Card

Just had to quickly share this vintage-looking shaped card I made using the Lamp free cutting file I posted the  other day.  I used Bazzil cardstock for the base and paper from the Ancestry line by KB Company for the lampshade. Rather than the cut fringe, I decided to use a piece of real lace, and inked it a little bit with dark brown ink to grunge it up a bit. The finishing touch was a string of seed pearls across the top and bottom of the lampshade, and some dark brown inking along the sides of the shade.

    Are you a Digital Scrapbooker?

Some of you may already know, but I've been a digital scrapbooker for many years, and have been designing digiscrapping products, teaching classes and creating instructional videos under the name Red Leaf DigiScrapping for many of those years. In fact, if you were really paying attention, you'd notice that my logo on this site is "Cre8ive Cutz by Red Leaf DigiScrapping".

Rather than trying to keep up with two sites, which hasn't been working well lately, I've decided to bring together all my crafting onto this blog.  So, for now I'm going to point you to a few things, but eventually I will get my videos and digiscrapping products moved over to this site.

So, without further ado, if you are interested in watching instructional videos teaching you how to do photo editing and digital scrapbooking using Photoshop Elements, my software of choice, have a look at myYouTube channel. Since Halloween is coming, here's a fun video that shows you how to turn your children into ghosts (but only in the digital world, not the real one!) :-)

New free cutting file - Lamp

Finally, a new freebie up on the blog! Feels like its been forever, but I finally got a new cutting file created for you, this versatile lamp. Use it on cards or scrapbook pages, or turn it into a card. The shade would look so pretty cut out of patterned paper, and the trim can easily be replaced by real lace for a vintage look. Just click on the preview image to download the files. As always, MTC, SVG and now PDF files are included in the free download.

    Updated Terms of Use

In light of some recent discussions on the Make the Cut! discussion board, I have decided to change the terms of use on my files to allow commercial use. The new terms of use are as follows (and are published on the Terms of Use page as well):

All files from Cre8ive Cutz, paid and free, cannot be resold or redistributed in any way. Feel free to alter them for your own personal projects, but please do not alter the files to reshare and claim as your own, whether you are giving them away or selling them.

You may make items with Cre8ive Cutz files for sale or other commercial use including classes (including files downloaded under the former personal use agreement), as long as the digital pattern file itself is not redistributed or sold.

If items are being made for commercial use, particularly classes, acknowledgement of Cre8ive Cutz as the pattern designer is appreciated. Photos of the projects that can be published on this website are always welcome as well.

If you have any questions, please post a comment here or send me an email. Thanks.
